International women's day 2023

Audio Highlighting


For International Women's Day, 2023, we will be doing something a little different to our usual programming. Below, we are audio highlighting s women and non-binary people from the North East. We also recorded a one-off podcast audio panel, with three guests and a host who work in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). You can also find this below.

On Saturday the 11th of March, we also have a Bend&Shake evening event, celebrating electronic music with four DJs.

Azula Bandit

Non-binary performer, host and DJ, Azula Bandit, is a Mzansi style DJ, supplying sweet sounds coming all the way from South Africa that cross between dance, electronic and house music. Their sets also bring women and non-binary heavy Hip Hop and RnB sounds, perfect for filling a dance floor.

Their hosting and dance performances are energetic and memorising, bringing South African moves and crowd gathering vibes.

They are also in the collective Spin City Crew and regularly performs at Bend&Shake

Aimee Caroll

Aimee, the owner of RinkyDInk Cancles is an alternative content creator and business owner based in Leeds, however her heart will always belong to where she grew up; Newcastle.

Now 27, Aimee began her business in the thick of the 2020 pandemic, at a time when people were searching for home comforts. Her candles became a success, and within six months, she was a full-time candle maker. Now Aimee works to raise awareness for mental health recovery, and empower women through her brand.

Beccy Owen

Beccy Owen is a self-taught musician, composer, singer, songwriter, performer, producer, musical director and sound designer with over twenty years’ experience. She is also queer, neuro-divergent and disabled. These are facets of Beccy’s identity that are interwoven throughout her work. Beccy has established herself as a cherished part of the North’s cultural fabric; has performed at the UK’s most renowned venues, festivals and live art programmes; and has had her music featured across BBC Radio and television since 2002.

Dami Fawehinmi

Dami Fawehinmi goes by  Journals Of Dami (pronouns she/he/they) and is non-binary. She is a cultural curator and photographer who focuses on creating multi-dimensional representation for marginalised communities. She also runs her own media company called Navii Media that creates and curates interactive events, platforms and pages that support these groups to exist unapologetically. She has worked with Channel 4, Nikon, NatWest, UKBFTOG, Northern Pride and more.

Sofia Barton

Sofia Barton is a Cultural Activist and Multidisciplinary Artist from the North East who creates contemporary artwork inspired by nature and her Punjabi heritage.

This contemporary artwork is often comprised of bright colour palettes which are influenced by South Asian textiles and architecture to vintage matchboxes. Inspired by everyday objects she creates pieces depicting backgrounds and context of places, merging the traditional with a careful study of a modern society. Her creative practice has developed links with multiculturalism, feminism, and the LGBTQIA+ community.

Clients have included Northern Pride, Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Wild in Art, GemArts, Laing Art Gallery, Durham University, Tyneside Cinema and NEXUS.

Based in the north east, Leila D’Aronville has worked in the cultural sector for over 15 years. She is currently the Managing Director for music promotion and development agency, @northernroots_ncl , Founder of the Tyne and Wear @necfreelancers and Vice Chair of Newcastle Cultural Compact. Leila has been a massive help to our founder Chantal Herbert and is a champion and supporter of what we do. We love you Leila 💜.
